How to start a Keto Diet

When starting a new diet, it can be hard to know what foods you should and shouldn’t eat. One diet that is growing in popularity is the keto diet. But what is it exactly?

 

What is a Keto Diet?

Keto is where your diet consists of a very low carb intake but a higher fat intake. The significant decrease of carbs into your body means your body goes into a metabolic state known as ketosis. Ketosis basically means your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat, which is why many people turn to this diet when their goal is to lose weight.

 

What to eat on Keto Diet?

Most keto diets will limit your carb intake to around 20-50g per day. Some examples of foods that are high in fat but low in carbohydrates are: fish, red meat, dairy products such as cheese, non-starchy vegetables (eg stay away from potatoes or sweet potatoes as these are high in carbs), and high fat vegetables such as olives or avocados.

 

 

Are Olives allowed on A Keto Diet?

Most fruits are not deemed as keto-friendly as many contain lots of sugars, which equals carbs. However, lovers of olives are in luck, as olives are one of the few exceptions and are in fact, highly recommended and encouraged. Olives are a great source of fat whilst remaining incredibly low in carbohydrates, in every 100g of olives there is only around 3 net carbs. They are the perfect way to fill yourself up whilst on a keto diet, either as a light snack or even on top of salads.

Can you drink Olive Oil on Keto?

Seeing as Extra Virgin Olive Oil is commonly made just by pressing olives straight from a tree without any extra additives, the same rule applies. Olive Oil is a great way to flavour or cook your meals whilst keeping to the keto diet plan as EVOO has 0 carbs. This is because all the calories in Olive Oil come from monosaturated fats, which are the best kind, and are exactly what the keto diet calls for.
