What Exactly is Bastille Day?
Known in France as La Fête Nationale (The National Holiday) or simply le 14 juillet, Bastille Day is the French equivalent of the Fourth of July.
It commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. The Bastille was a medieval fortress and prison in Paris that represented the oppressive royal authority of the French monarchy. When an angry mob stormed the building, it became a major turning point in the French Revolution, symbolizing the birth of the modern French nation and the core values of liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Today, the holiday is celebrated with spectacular military parades on the Champs-Élysées, massive fireworks displays over the Eiffel Tower, and neighborhood dance parties across France. But thanks to NYC's vibrant Francophone community, we get to join in on the fun right here.
The 2026 NYC Edition: What You Need to Know
For over 20 years, L'Alliance New York has hosted the largest Bastille Day celebration in the US, drawing tens of thousands of attendees. This year's vibrant theme is Montmartre to Manhattan – Celebrating 250 Years of French American Creativity, and it promises to be an unforgettable afternoon.
